Pit bull puppy found 'near death'

Calling it a "Christmas miracle," the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it recently rescued a pit bull puppy that had "a very low body temperature and was near death" from a shed in a trailer park in North Amityville.

Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross said Wednesday the puppy was in an almost frozen state - and is in critical condition in an emergency veterinary center in Plainview.

An ongoing investigation is attempting to identify if the puppy's condition was the result of human neglect -- and officials are urging anyone with information on the situation to contact them at 631-382-7722.

All calls will remain confidential, officials said.
